Chiquis (born Martha L. Barrón) was born in Nogales, Sonora, Mexico and raised in Nogales, Arizona. She has worked in behavioral and medical research with the University of Arizona in the fields of Psychology, Psychiatry, Women’s Studies and Infectious Diseases. Her interests lie in observing cultural influences that impact racial and gender health disparities. Chiquis’ work in academia is closely tied to and inspires the themes in her creative works. She has received creative writing grants from the American Association of University Women, Fundación Valparaíso (Mojácar, Almería, Spain), and Vermont Studio Center. Her self-published novel, Café Dulcet, received two awards in the 13th Annual International Latino Book Awards. She is also author of the motivational gift book Good Things for a Young Woman’s Spirit (published in English and Spanish) and creator and editor of Art Motif Magazine.
